Hueston Woods State Park

College Corner, OH 45003

For my IMS 228 co-lab in the topic of Public Interest Technology, I decided to choose Hueston Woods State Park as the subject of interest for my final project. This project is focusing on a government-run citizen service and find a way to improve on it. This project aims to focus on the lack of communication and promotion of the various events, services, and activities offered at Hueston Woods.

About The Project

Hueston Woods State Park is a state park located in the Butler and Preble counties in Ohio. Hueston Woods has various activities and servies to offer visitors. They can stay in the lodges, cabins, or camp on the campgrounds. There are special events held throughout the year that visitors can attend. During their stay or just visiting for the day, visitors have a multitude of activities they can engage in at Hueston Woods. Activities include archery, swimming, disc golf, to going to the nature center, and these are only a few of the exciting activities Hueston Woods has to offer.

My experience

I wanted to focus on the experience of visitors of Hueston Woods and how they learn about information about events, services, and activities available to them. To gain further insight about Hueston Woods and about the experience of a visitor, I decided that I would go to Hueston Woods myself and see how easy it was to find information about the events, services, and activities offered there.

When driving in to the main entrance for the Lodging and Conference area, I saw several signs. It seemed that there were many signs that clearly directed visitors to the different areas of the park.

When looking around in the different areas of the park, I noticed that there were many information boards. These information boards had emergency contact numbers, hunting season dates, social media information, and information about the hiking trails. I did not see very many signs about the services or activities at Hueston Woods.

I had to look all around the park to find information about the different types of activities that are available on the Hueston Woods property. I found an information board that had papers inside giving information about the events, information, and directory.
